A major problem looming in all industrialized countries is due to the baby boomers moving into old age. This will cause a drastic increase in the age of driver populations, in North America, Europe and Japan. (In the USA alone, there are estimates that some 40 million drivers over 65 yrs., are driving on the roads, of which some 19.1 million are over the age of 75yrs.and that by 2030 the number of drivers over 65yrs. will increase to 70 million). Aging cause’s slower reaction times and aging eyesight does not see as well, particularly at night. If present road safety standards are to be maintained, then the visibility of all types of markings and signs has to be increased, particularly at present day key high accident areas. Traffic Congestion = Increasing Pollution and Increase Societal Anxiety (road rage etc): Everywhere, road building and expansion is not keeping pace with dramatic vehicle growth. The limited road infrastructures are clogged with this ever increasing traffic, particularly around cities. This causes wasted fuel, wasted time, and concentration of air pollution in neighborhoods, leading to undesirable consequences particularly for the sick, elderly and infants; therefore using the roads more efficiently is becoming more and more important. (The Texas Transportation Institute in its recent assessment of traffic congestion in the USA, estimated that America is wasting some 72 billion dollars a year in wasted fuel and time in traffic congestion.
Bottlenecks are on the rise: Source: AASHTO Journal February 24, 2004The number of U.S. metropolitan areas suffering from traffic congestion and gridlock continues its rise to the point where safety, air quality and wasted fuel are decreasing American's quality of life, according to an updated study released by the American Highway Users Alliance.) In its first update since 1999, “the Unclogging America's Arteries? Effective Relief for Highway Bottlenecks study states that the number of traffic bottlenecks rose to 233 in 33 states and the District of Columbia in 2004, a 40% increase over the 1999 findings using the same methodology.) Accidents Cause Roads to Be Used At Less Than Optimum Capacity:
The higher accident rate the more inefficient the road becomes, the higher are the costs society pays. Society costs range from injuries, increased insurance rates, increased police and other agencies time, long traffic tie ups and delays, driver rage, to having to build further road infrastructures or widen roads to increase capacity. This in turn inevitably leads to increasing taxes and increasing costs all around. Put bad weather into the equation, with ever-increasing traffic as well as aging driver populations, then enhanced guidance becomes even more critical.
Visibility Problems with Painted Markings:
There is a problem with painted markings, no matter how wide one makes them.As everyone who drives at night knows, in bad weather such as slick wet pavements, painted markings tend to disappear and vanish. This is particularly so during heavy rains, snow whiteouts, heavy fog, and dust storms, precisely the times when these critical guidance / safety markings are most needed by drivers. LEDline?/SUP>and LEDlineDVTM can help alleviate this visibility problem by providing highly visible, glowing linear guidance markings, especially in bad weather.
An immediate realistic way to increase road efficiency and safety for all concerned is to ensure that vehicle guidance markings are clearly visible in the widest possible weather conditions. Drivers can be more clearly directed if signs, painted markings and other guidance devices, such as pedestrian crossings, extra rush hour vehicle lanes and barriers are clearly marked and highlighted. This is where LEDline?can be of help, particularly in bad weather.
